Black is the New Black

Does the idea of black decor make you think of the high gloss lacquer of the 80’s?

When mirrored surfaces ruled and neon deco prints adorned every available wall.

Don’t let this picture of the past ruin dark colors for you. Black finishes, especially high contrast design such as black and white, are very much an appealing modern day aesthetic.

One of the simplest ways to use black in modern design is to infuse your space with some warmth to offset the dominant nature of the color.

Natural materials such as stone and wood are perfect ways to do just that.

Check below this beautiful kitchen by Haven Builders in Saskatoon. The black modern cabinetry is accented by the sleek grey Cambria Clareanne countertop and the wood ceiling and bar add some much-needed character to the stark contrast of the other materials.

Texture is another really important element when it comes to designing with dark color. Black can be a very warm, comforting color in itself when the different textures are taken into account. Layering tones and patterns creates depth and prevents an overwhelming expanse of black. This Cambria Blackpool Matte countertop, for example, contrasts well with the glossy stove top and weathered black wood backsplash.

That being said, classic high contrast black and white is always going to be a winner. Using black accents and hardware is the easiest way to make a boring white bathroom come to life. A bold statement island with a black marble look makes a striking feature for any kitchen and is sure to draw all eyes in the room. For example, this Cambria Mersey island serves as an obvious focal point in this open kitchen.

So don’t be afraid! Take a risk and you’ll be rewarded with a room that is the envy of all those who thought black was a thing of the past.
